October 7, 2024, marks the one-year anniversary of the Gaza-Israel conflict’s resurgence. As the war continues to affect the Middle East, its impact on Africa has become evident in various spheres.

On October 7, 2023, the Gaza Strip and Israel descended into one of the most intense and destructive military engagements in their long-standing conflict. This marked the beginning of the fifth war in the Gaza–Israel conflict, which has been ongoing since 2008. As we reach the one-year anniversary of this conflict, it’s important to reflect on the events that have unfolded, the devastation it has caused, and the continuing impact on the Africa continent.

Humanitarian Crisis in North Africa

One of the most significant consequences of the Gaza-Israel conflict has been the humanitarian crisis spilling over into North Africa. Countries such as Egypt have felt the strain from the influx of displaced populations fleeing the violence. The Rafah border crossing, Gaza's primary link to Egypt, has become a vital artery for aid deliveries, but the volume of refugees has placed immense pressure on Egypt's already stretched resources. The government faces challenges in managing the needs of these displaced individuals while ensuring that essential humanitarian assistance reaches those in desperate need. Reports indicate that many refugees struggle to find shelter, food, and medical care, exacerbating an already dire situation in the region.

Political Divisions Among African Nations

The political landscape in Africa regarding the Gaza-Israel conflict has been marked by a spectrum of responses. The African Union (AU) has consistently called for an immediate ceasefire and a two-state solution, advocating for diplomacy as the only viable path forward. However, the responses of individual African nations vary widely. Countries like Morocco and Sudan, which have normalized ties with Israel, have adopted a more neutral or cautious stance, reflecting the complexities of their foreign relations. This divergence in approach highlights the broader implications of the conflict for African diplomatic relations, as nations navigate their historical ties and current geopolitical realities.

Economic Fallout and Energy Disruptions

The conflict has also had indirect but significant repercussions for Africa's economy. As energy supplies from the Middle East fluctuate due to ongoing hostilities, African nations reliant on oil imports, such as Kenya and Nigeria, are experiencing rising fuel costs. These disruptions come at a particularly challenging time, as many African economies are still recovering from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and grappling with high inflation rates. The rising cost of fuel has a ripple effect, impacting transportation, food prices, and overall economic stability, further complicating recovery efforts across the continent.

Security Concerns and Extremism

In addition to economic and humanitarian challenges, the Gaza-Israel conflict has intensified security concerns in Africa. Militant groups, particularly in the Sahel region, have sought to exploit the conflict's narrative to recruit followers and disseminate propaganda. Islamist extremist groups such as Boko Haram and al-Shabaab have referenced the Gaza-Israel war in their messaging, positioning themselves as defenders of Palestinian rights while furthering their own agendas. This rhetoric has raised alarms among governments in regions already struggling with insurgencies, as the potential for increased radicalization and violence looms larger.

Africa’s Role in Diplomacy

Amid these challenges, some African nations have stepped up their roles in international diplomacy regarding the conflict. Egypt, with its geographical proximity to Gaza, has played a prominent role in mediating ceasefires and facilitating negotiations. South Africa, known for its strong advocacy for Palestinian rights, has also taken a vocal stance in international forums, pushing for peaceful resolutions to the conflict. These diplomatic efforts not only underscore Africa's commitment to regional stability but also reflect a growing desire to influence global outcomes, highlighting the continent's potential role in addressing international crises.
